tmk: drone from above

this video of a short tape measure kid set from this past winter provides a nice bird’s eye view of me & hellmut at work. it also really captures the kind of rapport and telepathy we’ve built through playing together for seven years. the new record is shaping up nicely!

evil twins: two new records from the dorf out now!

The Dorf, a huge collective from the German rustbelt that I am a member of, is very proud to announce the official release of our newest records, the twin albums “eviL” and “evyL”, which both document our spring 2014 collaboration with noise rock guitar legend Caspar Br√∂tzmann and honorary Dorf member FM Einheit of Einst√ľrzende Neubauten infamy. We have chosen to spread out six high energy tracks across two releases in two different formats. The CD “eviL” features the band tackling four multi-facetted Jan Klare compositions with our guests, while the vinyl EP “evyL” contains a blistering ensemble version of Br√∂tzmann’s “Massaker” and Klare’s Beethoveen inspired drone epic “5 3/4”.

Both releases are now available for order and/or digital download, along with all of our previous records and an acclaimed documentary film about the band, from our new webshop at Bandcamp:

THE DORF WEBSHOP

We hope you enjoy the tunes and would like to thank those of you who came out to share those special nights in Cologne, Duisburg and Dortmund with Caspar and Mufti and all of us! Go pick up the records, there’s some chance you’re on there too ūüėČ

homebrew bootleg 2: electric brewgaloo

and here for your home viewing pleasure is a full video of my set at noiseberg the other night (you can still grab the audio at the link in the post below). don’t be alarmed: there are brief rolling blackouts between changes in camera perspective but the audio keeps rolling. thanks a lot to regis at noiseberg for the chance to play & for documenting the show. at first i thought this performance was unfocused but it turns out that it was just mental ūüėČ

in all seriousness, it feels very good to be in a place as an improvisor where the music can go where it wants or needs to go & where things can be expressed that may be more important than my occasionally timid notion of how things have to be. that’s what it’s all about. hope you enjoy it too.

tape measure kid: live video & new record(s) on the way

i have been playing a lot again with my friend hellmut neidhardt as tape measure kid over the past eight months or so. we’ve been recording for a new record or two and i have finally also gotten some good live video from concerts, which i will start to put up over the coming months. here is one from this winter that i am very happy with. i love focused improvisation, love idiomatic improvisation just as much as supposed non-idiomatic improvisation, love free improvisation within a band context, with a sort of band sound born of experience & exploration but where you have to start from scratch every time you play. it is challenging & very satisfying. stick with this one till the end, it’s worth it!

& if you haven’t already heard our previous records, go on over to denovali & have a listen:

ZERO IS AN EVEN NUMBER

great music (by george korein)

here’s a beautiful poem by george korein of philadelphia (who is also responsible for my favorite post on a music forum i frequent, a story about confusing a cockatoo training tape with a newly purchased ministry tape, a hilarious mistaken framing double cassette deck mindfuck tale that i will have to quote another time. hope you enjoy the poem as much as i do.

————————————————————————————

Great music is falling out of our pockets, rolling amidst branded
napkins and fast-food containers.
When the arcade claw crane drops down the uncovered drain, it never
comes up with that great music which is never heard again.
Great music becomes a currency of curios for deaf vermin in the sewers.

Great music is whistled by the tone deaf man who heard a tone deaf man
whistle the tune he heard from the tone deaf man who heard a tone deaf
man whistle the tune he heard from the tone deaf man who heard a tone
deaf man whistle the tune he heard from a tone deaf woman humming “Ode to Joy”.

Great music is played by a man drumming two bladed spatulas into the
makings of a cheese steak on the grill.

Great music is at least 4 hours long and requires exhaustive
explorations of melismatic iterations and invocations upon epithets
until the singer falls asleep.

Good music is at least 20 years old, great music is at least 20 years
into the future.

– George Korein

special collaboration: the dorf & caspar brötzmann

a band i am in, the dorf, a 28-odd-piece collective from the rustbelts of germany, played three collaborative shows with caspar brötzmann last year.

br√∂tzmann doesn’t do this sort of thing very often at all, & it turned out to be very special.
bandleader/composer jan klare will be releasing a record made up of live recordings from our three shows together this may. i will update you here on where to find it when the time comes!

in the meantime, here’s a sneak preview:

MASSAKER!!!

man, how great is it when caspar cuts off the feedback at 9:35? i remember having a hard time holding it together on stage, thinking “holy fuck, this is really happening”. a big thank you to jan klare, for the whole thing, and to kai niggemann for capturing it on video. & thank you for checking in & taking a look.

solo show at antje öklesund

i’m playing a solo show in berlin on friday, may 17th, at antje √łklesund.
the line-up is sweet, the venue is lovely, the PA is all “pro gear/pro attitude” & the folks organising the whole deal are very charming.

& i get to do whatever i feel like when i get behind my kit.
can’t ask for more than that.

i would be delighted if the one or other of you berliners should choose to come out & support holzmund & share the evening with me.

it’s easy to get to in friedrichshain, i’m on first at eleven, should cost 5‚ā¨ before eleven & 7-10‚ā¨ (you decide) after that.

…more details here!

hmkv industrial on tour book out now

a short story i wrote a while back & posted below has been published by revolver publishing in a book entitled “industrial on tour”, avaliable here.

“industrial on tour” details hartware medienkunstverein’s 2011 tour of poland (for which i supplied the musical support) & also features contributions from inke arns, joanna erbel, michal libera, daniel muzyczuk & thibaut de ruyter.

the story, “there is no such thing as a statue,” is an oblique take on my tour experiences, & was inspired by a rumor that i heard in gdansk, regarding a statue of margaret thatcher that is purportedly planned for the solidarity museum currently under construction there.

you can also read it here if you like.

transat reduxidently: live at atlas theater

i’d rather be in poland: exclusive tour tracks

more exclusive shit!
more exclusive polish shit!
bardziej ekskluzywne polskie gówno!

these two tracks were made to accompany the book, mentioned in the previous post, documenting my 2011 tour of poland with hartware medienkunstverein. the first track is a sort of medley of live recordings from the concerts & some field recordings of dear friends & total strangers. the main speaker is michal libera. the second track is a kind of free techno jam that i recorded in the museum in the train station in turnow, warming up before my show. i edited it to incorporate field recordings from the van & my walks.

dedicated with much love to inke arns, thibaut de ruyter, daniel muzyczuk & michal libera & to all our wonderful hosts & guides in poland: you were beautiful.

i’d rather be in poland by the preterite

there is no such thing as a statue

guys!

i wrote a damn short story, yes it is true, the first one in eighteen years.

how the fuck did that happen?

well, i was asked by inke arns of hartware medienkunstverein to write something for a publication to document our tour of poland this last fall (hmkv presents “industrial on tour”). i was invited to contribute whatever i wanted to this book that would include articles from tour comrades & curators inke, thibaut de ruyter, daniel muzyczuk & michal libera.

on tour in poland with hmkv

in poland for two weeks on tour with the good folks of hartware medienkunstverein. got here saturday, been quite a whirl so far. i have yet to see a man screw in a lightbulb by himself, jesus christ. but when i do i will make sure to get a picture. i keeed! what a fucking interesting place full of very generous people who have done everything in their power to make us smarter. first show tomorrow on my damn birthday, in gdansk (aka danzig!). i have been forewarned that the acoustics are shitty & there’s a bar in the room. should feel right at home ūüėČ i will give them my best eksperymentalnego muzyka from this belts of rust from germany, yes? anyways, i will try to post some impressions here over the next weeks if i get a minute.
