SHAPE Platform 2020
A very happy piece of news comes to close out 2019: The organizers of the SHAPE platform, an EU funded collaboration between 16 different festivals/initiatives dedicated to bringing emerging music and AV artists to a wider audience, invited me to join their 2020 program. I am still pinching myself about this one to be honest. Looking forward to meeting the other artists in Riga next spring and reaching adventurous ears throughout Europe (and perhaps beyond) this coming year. Check out the other participants, lots of idiosyncratic voices to be discovered!
New record out now on Gertrude Tapes:
For downloads and physical copies in the USA or thereabouts, please order from the label:
If you are in or near Germany, you can save on shipping by ordering a physical copy (including download) directly from me (follow the link in the player) as long as supplies last.
Vagabond Laws was recorded live in Budapest and Bremen in 2016 and 2017.
Follow-Up Album Finished
The follow-up to Vagabond Laws is finished and I’m currently trying to find a good home for it.
Tentatively titled Ballad of the External Life (inspired by the Hugo von Hofmannsthal poem “Ballade des äusseren Lebens”), this record features (cassette) tape treatments of my own tuned percussion source material, swarm-like compositions made through improvised tape “scratching”, embedded field recordings (ad hoc dictaphone installations recorded in various outdoor settings) and field recordings of life events both heavy and casual. I hope to share a teaser here soon.
Debut Re-Release in Progress
I’m in the process of preparing my debut as The Preterite for re-release on my own label, on double CD and double tape with expanded original artwork. In the meantime I’m offering both volumes as name-your-price downloads on Bandcamp:
Boomkat wrote upon first release:
“The best of the latest Weird Forest batch is The Preterite’s eponymous double cassette. Aka Jim Campbell, The Preterite uses modified cassette walkmen for ‘tape scratching’ together with unidentified electronic gadgetry to control deliriously dreamlike montages landing somewhere between Atelecine, The Caretaker and Indignant Senility. His phantasmic sound is as eerie as it is engaging, taking in strangely detuned pianos and off-kilter tape loops, all seemingly high off the fine clouds of ferric noise which convect between dusty notes, spooling and speeding reels, amorphous drones and a generally all round surreal ambience. Genuinely one of the weirdest cassettes we’ve had in. (…) TIP!”
Winter 2019 Tour in Central Eastern Europe
I’ll be heading out in a few weeks with my friends Bilwa Costa and Nicolas Wiese to play some shows in Poland, Czech Republic and Germany. Come on out and say hi!
